Teens and Sleep
Sleep experts talked about how and why teens aren't getting enough sleep, and why parents could be part of it. I learned that parents are not aware of how much sleep their teens are getting. The teachers are the ones who see the results of the teens not getting enough sleep. Now a days parents go to bed before their children so they really don't know how much sleep teens are getting.
We as teens seem to be in a constant state of jet lag. In a way this feels accurate because I myself feel tired and like there isn't enough time in the day to sleep. Almost like the time just slips away.
Sleep also has a effect on grades. According to their survey, the students who went to bed early and got the minimum 8 hours of sleep got better grades. The students who don't get enough sleep tended to get B's and C's.
It was also discussed how bedrooms have become entertainment centers. Most students have some kind of electronic device in their rooms so they want to stay up and use these things instead of going to bed.
Over all this radio show was really eye opening. It made me look at how much sleep I get and how I spend my time when I get home from school. It also discussed the aspect of one's health and driving while drowsy.
I also learned about selective attention. It's focussing on one thing at a time. Most people can't focus on two things at the same time. A good example for this would be, can you have a conversation with someone on the phone while also watching a tv show and following the plot behind it? Most people can't. This affects me because when i try ot focus on two different things i get stressed and can't even focus on one of the tasks.
One thing that really surprised me was a side note on page 92 that stated. "Dolphins, porpoises, and whales sleep with one side of their brain at a time." This is an interesting fact that intrigued me.
I agree with dual processing. Perception, memory, thinking, language, adn attitudes all operate on two levels. a conscious, deliberate "high road" adn an unconscious, automatic "low road". We knoe more than we know we know. This is interesting because we do alot without even thinking about it. However we have to think of other things in order to do them.

The man iwth two brains
I was finally able to watch the man with two brains. It was extremely interesting to see that someone could draw two figures like that, but yet couldn't see certain words when they flashed on a certain side of the screen. That movie was very effective.

The first activity I did was Voyage to Serendip. It was interesting to see how frazzled I fot when i didn't find the island within the first 15 picks. It ended up takin gme 49 tries, on the hardest level, to find the island. The second activity I did was The Three doors of Serendip. I still don't understand how that game works but I will go home tonight to figure it out. you have to pick between 3 doors which one you think has 5 bucks behind it. I just learned that i got aggrivated easily. I realize now that I should take a closer look at things rather just playing. Yes it changes how i persieve the world. I will definately start paying closer attention.
People always associate love with the heart, but our brains are acctually what fall in love. This intrigued me becasue I am a sucker for a good love story. I find myself holding my heart when I hear one, when in reality I should be holding my head.
I also learned that biology does have alot to do with psychology. The better we understand our bodies, the better we can understand our minds and behaviors. I couldn't watch the man with 2 brains because my login wasn't working.

Research can help better explain different things about ourselves and of the things around us. Research leads to finding new theories and hypotheses. Thus involving the scientific method.
The article I read was, "Why do we do dumb or irrational Things. 10 Brilliant Social Psychology Studies" I read the tenth study on " I can't believe my eyes: conforming to the norm." When faced with a decision in a group we fear disapproval from the others in the group that we agree with the majority rather than sticking by our gut and standing out from the rest. We conform to the group despite the evidence before our very eyes. Even when we are in groups for a class we find ourselves agreeing with everyone else the majority of the time, just to blend in and agree with everyone else.
This week I learned that psychology is definitely not value-free. Our own values affect how we study, what we study and how we look at the results to get our conclusion. I also learned that cultures matter in shaping our behaviors. We need to be more aware of how culture affects us since the growing mixture and clashing of different cultures is so great. Also the placebo effect actually does work. If you think you will get better and have a more positive outlook on life it will help the healing process. If you think your life is over and you have no help, the out come will not be as gratifying.

Before I read the first chapter, I just thought that psychology was the study of one's mind and their behavior. Now, after readind chapter 1, i realize that psychology is involved in almost everything. Every little thing we do and the actions we take everyday are all psychological. Our attitudes, common sense, even the career path we choose are all psychological. Psychology affects my life in more ways than i thought. It affects my relationships with friends and family, my common sense, my morals, the way I solve problems with critical thinking, how I react to certain situations, even my moods.
One thing that I learned that surprised me, was what psychology's critical inquiry has been able to find. For instance, within days, newborns can recognize their mother's odor and voice. Critical inquiry has also debunked presumptions like how opposites do not generally attract. Another thing that i learned was that even words we use to describe something can reflect our values. This is intriguing to me because we all do use different words to describe different things. How I describe the life of a bird would be complete different to the way someone else describes it.

intro
My name is Aleena C. from Stratford High school and I am 18 years old. Something that has shaped me would be my family. They are my life and I would do anything for them and always put them first. I firmly believe that nothing should come between me and my family and so far, nothing has. At a horseshoe tournament one time, my sister was in a playoff for first place. The rest of my family could barely watch. Someone walked by and asked, "What's wrong with her?" A freind of the family turned around and said, "She's a Cook. When one feels it, they all feel it." This statement is so true about my family.
I believe Psychology is important because it will help us better understand the people and the world around us. By understanding we can solve so many different problems like our economy, or the different crime rates. I think Psychology is the study of ourselves, our thoughts, feelings, actions, and how we interact and understand the people around us.
